Having been exposed to Internet long before it became public, what was more natural than trying my hand in web design? Programming knowledge mattered. At the time you could count websites by the dozens. A far cry from today, when Google searches give you dozens of millions results to your queries.

These origins of web design, tightly connected to the computer sciences and enthusiast's communities naturally led to websites where technical prowess and innovation dominated, sometimes at a cost to what we call today the user experience.

In the early days, it was indeed the technical gadgets and the latest programming tricks that made a difference. Websites were few and far between, and it paid to show off a little. But over the years this led to more and more distractions, making the original message barely comprehensible.
